I use the usb adapter I am linking to at the bottom and it is usb-c. Most newer android phones use a usb-c port but I have a couple of older android phones that use a micro usb port. iPhones use a lightning port.
Note that some adapters support only charging, while others support OTG (On-The-Go) for connecting USB devices.
Do a search on amazon or other retailer for "usb hub adapter OTG" with the type of connector you need (e.g. usb-c or micro usb) for your phone and make sure the adapter has the ports you need for your usb devices (keyboard, etc.), or acquire compatible devices.
Check your phone's compatibility for OTG. I have been using usb adapters for many years and I have found that compatibility is hit and miss. Sometimes I have been able to troubleshoot the issue and figure it out and sometimes not. Android: Look up “[your phone model] OTG support” or install an app like USB OTG Checker. Your phone's operating system also needs to be compatible and older versions may not be.
I use the following setup for my usb adapter:
Ports
USB-C (out): to my phone or tablet
USB-A (in): keyboard
USB-A (in): mouse (used for my tablet but I just use a keyboard with my phone)
Ethernet (in): ethernet cable connected to my home network
USB-C (in): power cord
HDMI (in): optional--to a second monitor (or you could connect a projector)
Also, I sometimes use the voice access app to control the phone with my voice. This may help electrosensitive individuals who want to minimize contact with their phones.
If a USB device needs more power than your phone can supply, use a powered USB hub or get an adapter with external power input
